Human hair exist in the natural grouping of 1 to 4 hair together this natural grouping of hairs, is called graft. In hair transplant follicular unit grafts are extracted and transplanted according to the extent of hair loss problem of particular patient so it is mandatory to understand the need of graft numbers to be restored in transplant sessions
Hair loss can be classified according to the Norwood classification depends upon the nature and extent of hair loss. Male pattern hair loss can be classified in the I to vii Norwood classification of grafts.
Transplant surgeons must be aware about the guidelines for implanting number of grafts in first, second or subsequent hair transplant session.
FIRST SESSION AND GRAFT NUMBERS
.in the very first session graft numbers can vary from 800- 3600 according to the Norwood scaling I to vii and in this sessions surgeons concentrate on the coverage of bald area not as much on the density of the hair.
This procedure can vary from 2 to 6 hours according to requirement for follicular units. For the more requirements large sessions called mega and Giga sessions are conducted to satisfy the needs of patients.
In the first session main goal of the surgeon is to cover crown areas with the existing sufficient supply of donor hairs for transplantation. If the supply of hair grafts is not adequate then existing hair in transplanted area are also cut and even grafts from body parts like arms, legs, abdomen, chest etc are also extracted according to requirement.
According to the guidelines expert should concentrate on the accomplishment of some goals in the first session like creating or designing the frontal hairline, providing extending coverage to head up to the vertex point with existing requirement and supply of grafts.
Most important doctors should strive for the sufficient density of hair as they can so that hair look natural and attractive after the initial session. In some cases additional sessions can be required according to the requirement for grafts.
SECOND SESSION AND GRAFT NUMBERS
In some cases patients seeks for second hair transplant session according to requirement for grafts as sometime in first session they could not get the desired density of hair so after getting actual results of first session in 10 to 12 months they go for second session. In this session surgeons can have goals to provide larger density with grafts, refinement of frontal hair line, coverage for crown area and account for additional hair loss if any.
SUBSEQUENT SESSIONS AND GRAFT NUMBER
If the requirement of grafts vary from the 1400 to 5000 as per the Norwood scaling starting from the classification IIa to VII then patient can look for the multiple sessions that are needed according to extent of problem, required look, affected area, laxity of scalp, desired look of patient.
In these sessions surgeons have to be extra careful for the supply of grafts for the transplantation so the number of grafts extracted can be optimally utilized for covering the affected area.
